in lieu is pleased to announce an exhibition of sculptures by Los Angeles artist Neidy Lizbet.

For her first show with in lieu, Lizbet pairs geometric forms and architectural structures with organic, seemingly-haphazardly-built forms that mimic the blossoming behavior of fungi. She employs repetitive gestures such as choking, ripping, pounding, throwing and compressing to manipulate otherwise conventional vessels. Lizbet then stretches or carves into the material, boldly encouraging the clay to expand, billow and protrude erratically.

Sometimes, these forms wade in colorful pools of epoxy, sun-dried salt, swollen dog food or raw honey, as seen in My Mouth Fills With Honey; other times, they fuse to stalwart plinths made of stoneware, brick or concrete; and in the case of Hung, the form is suspended midair by a chain.

There is a dualism in Lizbet’s color and textural decisions; the formal relationship between them is equally as sensual and elegant as it is grotesque and unsettling. Whether pendulous, surging, deflating, robust, or teetering, Lizbet’s ceramic sculptures test the limits of material, gravity, color, and texture with a nod towards iconoclasm.

Neidy Lizbet received a BA from Roski School of Fine Arts, University of Southern California (2013). She has exhibited at Other Places Art Fair (San Pedro, CA), Dread Lounge (Los Angeles), MFA Raymond Gallery - Art Center (Los Angeles), Matchbox Gallery - Rice University (Houston, TX) and Scranch (Wonder Valley, CA).

Lizbet lives and works in Los Angeles and Napa Valley, CA.
